In our recent blog we highlighted active adult 55 and older communities in Summerville, SC. And while Summerville boasts the most of these communities, there are others in the greater Charleston area worth mentioning.
Mount Pleasant
The Cottages at Carolina Park
This is a small community of only 48 homes that costs range from the high $400s to the mid $500s. Floor plans include options for 2-3 bedrooms with 2-4 bathrooms with single car garages. It is in a desired area of Mount Pleasant with ample shopping and dining close by. Amenities feature a fitness center and an outdoor pool. As with many active adult communities, the homeowner’s association takes care of lawn care and common area upkeep so this will be a great low maintenance option.
Liberty Cottages at Park West
This is a small luxury gated community within the Park West development in Mount Pleasant. Homes here will range from the low 500s to the low 700s. The community is small with only 43 homes, but they are a little larger than other active adult communities. House will range from 2700 sq feet to 3100 sq feet. As a resident of this community, you’ll have access to all of Park West’s amenities and can mingle with residents of all ages even though the area of your home will be restricted to those 55 and older. Residents can have access to the Park West Swim and Tennis Club and enjoy tennis, volleyball, outdoor pools for both kids and adults. The Park West development also offers boat storage, a bank, a veterinarian, fitness facilities, dentist office, urgent care doctor office, a hair salon, and plenty of dining options. Six miles of bike and hiking paths wind their way throughout the community. This development is perfect low maintenance option if you are looking for a neighborhood where everything you need is at your fingertips.
Encore Restore at Carolina Park
This is another active adult community within Carolina Park. When completed, it will consist of 112 homes that range from 1600 sq feet to 2100 sq feet. Prices are between the mid-400s to the mid-500s. Amenities include a fitness center, clubhouse, bocce ball and pickleball courts and a resort style pool. The grounds of the community will also include a dog park, a fishing lake, and scenic walking trails.
Charleston
The Elms of Charleston
This is an established, gated 55+ community located in North Charleston, SC. It is a low maintenance community of 325 homes that range currently from the mid 200’s to the mid-300s. Homes are only available on a resale basis. The community boasts a clubhouse with fitness room and catering kitchen. Outdoor amenities continue with an outdoor pool, a tennis court, and walking paths. This a great lower cost option in the Charleston area and is central to many attractions and areas of the city.
John’s Island
This is an interesting option on John’s Island with limited information available on the web. It is a small community with vacant land lots. Currently there are no homes for resale but sale prices for completed homes in the neighborhood have ranged from mid 500s to over one million. Vacant lots range from the mid 100s to low 200s. Residents have access to the community's park that has a picnic pavilion and barbecue area, a two-story pergola, two fire pits, horseshoes, and walking trails. If you are interested in a community further out from the hustle and bustle this might be a great option to consider.
Overall, there are many options for active adults over the age of 55 in Charleston and Summerville. Touring these communities to get a feel of the culture and amenities is a must if you are considering buying in an active senior community such as these.
