Summerville Happenings - January 2024

Here’s the Scoop on some things Happening in Summerville January 2024 edition!

What are they building??

Have you guys seen the lot on Bacon’s Bridge by the Sawmill Trail? It’s cleared, plumbing is in and construction is happening at rapid speed. But the big question is: What are they building??? While I know we will all be disappointed that it is not a car wash, bank, or tire shop, it’s actually a charter school! Kevin and I went to the info session about it to get the scoop because we didn’t even know what a charter school around here actually was.

The school, Summerville Preparatory Academy, is slated to open in the Fall of 2024. Yep! You read that right….this upcoming school year. While it may take the county years to build a school, SPA can get one up and operating in a few short months…although it did sound like this has been in the works for a while with the planning and prep part. Regardless, it’s an opportunity for families to send their children to a school that utilizes classic and alternative teaching methods and it doesn’t have to abide by the county district rules. The operators (same as Berkley Prep and Palmetto Scholars Academy) tout that they can tailor more to individual student needs. It’s free to attend but you have to apply and children will be selected to attend based on a lottery. Initially it will offer grades K5-6th but as those students age it will expand to K5-8th. And for those of you in Nexton and Berkeley County, word on the street is that they broke ground on the new middle school that is located within Nexton Midtown. While it’s not slated to open for a couple of years (again Berkeley County you should be taking notes from SPA), I know residents are happy to start seeing progress!

New Hot Spots Around Town

A few new exciting openings to mention….have you guys been to The Pickle Bar? No, well us neither. But it is on the to-do-list! We’ve heard great things about it and can’t wait to try it out! I’d love to know what you think if you’ve been!

Page’s Okra Grill opened their new restaurant in Nexton! While I loved their food truck, I can’t wait to check out their new space and be waited on! I see this in our bellies in the very near future. Always great food and a good choice for families with children!

Half-Moon Outfitters opened before the holidays but somehow I completely missed that this was even being built! If you haven’t been yet, it’s a great store to check out! While this store definitely targets active outdoor enthusiasts (which is really not me), I enjoyed browsing here so much and even bought some shoes! You’ll find clothing and activewear, shoes, sunglasses, hats, camping gear, and before Christmas, they even had Stanley Cups.

Restaurant Week

It’s restaurant week here in the Charleston area! Ever since Kevin and I moved here in 2014 we’ve always enjoyed choosing at least one restaurant to visit during this week. Usually lasting longer than a week, it’s running now through January 21st. I am a little late getting this into the blog so don’t forget to make your last minute reservations and support some of our great local restaurants. And one more thing about restaurant week…it’s actually a gripe. More of our local Summerville restaurants need to participate! I was disappointed to see only Hall’s on the Summerville list. We have so many great restaurants right here in Summerville! Have you been to Bexley’s, Laura, La Rustica? And you can’t forget some classics such as Myles & Jun, The Ice House, and Oscars. It would be great to see more participation in restaurant week without having to venture on the I-26 or the 526. See the full list of participating restaurants by following this link.

Alright! That’s all the new happenings I have right now, but I will keep y’all posted as I hear about more!
